Imelda
McCain had a
very special
reason for
opening a
toy store
five years
ago ..
McCain
travels
throughout
the U.S.A.
and Europe
(often with
her son,
Lucas) -
visiting
places that
range from
the
Nuremberg
Toy Fair in
Germany to
American
craft fairs
- to find
lines that
fit in with
her special
merchandise
mix. That
mix is
appreciated
by numerous
customers,
who include
children and
their
parents, as
well as
grandparents,
artists,
teachers,
therapists,
pediatricians
and
collectors
of arts -
the latter
of whom
visit the
store for
its offering
of high-end,
collectible
toys that
sell from
$200 to
$600. These
are usually,
signed,
dated and
are limited
editions,
notes
McCain.

"Walk
into Nyack's
Playing Mantis
toy store, and
you get an
immediate
feeling of Zen.
That's not a
feeling
associated with
big-box
retailers, which
are dominated by
aisles of
manufactured
plastic
playthings that
honk, beep,
flash, bang,
clang and cry.
Make no mistake:
Playing Mantis
has its fair
share of cars,
trucks, trains,
dolls and games.
But not a single
toy there
requires
batteries or an
electrical
outlet - and all
still manage to
inspire lots of
fun.
"I call it an
imagination-powered
store," says
owner Imelda
McCain.
McCain, a former
oncology nurse
who opened her
shop in the fall
of 2006, moved
last month to a
new storefront
on Nyack's North
Broadway. At the
same time, she
opened a second
outpost in
Tribeca."

reasons,
Imelda McCain

egalitarian and
humble as it is
inspired. |

As a parent shopping
for toys for her
son, Mccain felt a
lack of choice.
Despite extensive
offering, she found
"a disconnect
between the artist
and the consumer,
between economy and
humanity, and
between children and
